Description

The lighthouse can be reached by car; however, the routes from there are totally inaccessible for people with reduced mobility. You can park at the beginning of the road which leads to the lighthouse, from where you can use a wheelchair as the road surface has been asphalted. The road has speed limit of 30kmph and pedestrians have preference thereby facilitating access for people with reduced mobility. The slope is long but gentle, although the return journey to the lighthouse maybe a little tiring for non-motorised wheelchairs. Marvellous views of the Cantabrian Sea, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo, and Bakio. There are no adapted public WCs.

Highlight

  • There are 2 lighthouses at the Cape of Matxitxako: an old one in disuse, and a modern currently operational.

How to get here

To arrive, take the road BI 3101 from Bermeo leaving via Arene district and at the height of the gas plant we will leave the car parked on the right, accessing via a trail and descending to the lighthouse. Access via this trail means on our return we have to go up a slope with quite a steep incline.

Route

Cabo Matxitxako Bermeo (Biscay)

Section 1

From the parking to the Matxitxako Lighthouse

Suitable for people with reduced mobility (PRM)

The section begins in the district of Arene, where the surface is asphalt and the road wide without architectural barriers except for a downward slope which some may find long.  People in non-motorised wheelchairs are advised to have third party assistance here, although motorised wheelchairs have no access problems.
A walk overlooking the sea, where virtually the entire section is in the shade. There is traffic but it generally moves slowly due to the speed limit.
Parking spaces are not marked on the road. To avoid the upward slope on the return, you may leave your car closer to the lighthouse in parking areas on the hard shoulder without obstructing or hindering the entrance to private properties.
